Even though fabrics are made out of cotton, there are numerous names in which we identify them. Lawn fabric, Poplin fabric, Chino fabric, and Canvas fabric come under this category. They are made from cotton only. Then why are we calling it different names? In this article, we try to find out why.

 

What is Lawn Fabric?

You might have heard people mentioning lawn fabrics before. They are popularly used for making ladies wear. Lawn fabric originated from France. The word Lawn comes from ‘LAON’, which is a city in France. It is entirely made from Cotton. But in the early days, it was not made from cotton, rather linen.

What is the structure of Lawn fabric?

Lawn fabrics have yarn counts from the 60s. Most lawn fabrics have high yarn counts. Mostly expressed as 70’sx100’s / 80 x 80.

In this example, 70 is the warp count, 100 is the weft count. Whereas, 80 represents Ends per inch (EPI) and Picks per inch (PPI).

What are the characteristics of lawn fabric?

  • It is a plain weaved fabric
  • It has an opaque and sheer texture
  • Commonly identified as crisper than voile and softer than organdie.
  • Semi-transparent

Lawn fabrics come in plain white, dyed, and printed styles. Some items made from lawn fabric are blouses, underwear, nightwear, shirting, aprons, etc.

What is Poplin Fabric?

Poplin fabric was first made in France using silk warp and wool weft. But today one can find Poplin fabric made up of a variety of fibers like cotton, silk, polyester, and lycra. In order to make Poplin fabric, very fine warp yarns and coarse weft yarns are used.

Poplin fabric is also known as Tabinet fabric. It is a plain-woven fabric that has a tight weaving structure.

What are the characteristics of poplin fabric?

  • The surface of the fabric feels smooth
  • It is transparent and lightweight
  • It is durable
  • Comparatively inexpensive
  • A versatile fabric that can be dyed and printed easily.

Poplin fabrics are most commonly used for making shirts, pajamas, and ladieswear.

 

What is Chino Fabric?

During the mid-19th century, Chino fabrics were made for the British and French military uniforms. Chino fabrics were used for making trousers. When American-Spanish war veterans returned home, they were still wearing their chino fabrics. This was how chino fabrics got ‘civilized’.

Chino fabric simply means fabric made in China. Originally it was made from 100% cotton. But today we can find chino fabric made from a variety of synthetic fabrics.

  • Durability and abrasion-resistant
  • Easy to wash and dye

 

What is Canvas Fabric?

Canvas fabric was originally made in Italy as a sailcloth material. It was made from either linen or hemp. The word canvas is derived from the Greek word ‘cannabis’. But today canvas fabric is made from cotton. From being sailcloth, its use cases have increased to shoemaking, tent making, handbag making, and apparel making.

Canvas fabric has count variations between 50 -100. It is also known as duck, tarp, awning cloth, and tenting fabric. During the weaving process, cotton threads are woven in a simple plain weave, tightly woven pattern.
